The Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Experience Program is an annual three-month program running from mid-February to the end of May. The LGYEP seeks to encourage at-risk students to improve their school performance by offering a series of incentives each month. The program is an additional tool for educators to use as part of their ongoing efforts to help at-risk students improve in school. It is a unique program that allows educators the time to meet with each student at least once per month to help them set goals and discuss and evaluate their progress in four different areas: attendance, academics, commitment to self and commitment to others. The students that improve the most over the course of the program are nominated to receive a top incentive. Some of the goals in offering the top incentives are to introduce students to potential career paths, broaden their life experiences, help increase their personal self-esteem and promote positive interaction with peers and adults.
