Twelve to Receive Order of Manitoba
Twelve new members will be inducted into the Order of Manitoba this year, Lt.-Gov. John Harvard, chancellor of the order, announced today.
Established under special legislation to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence in any field of endeavour, the Order of Manitoba is the province’s highest honour.
Recipients are selected by an independent advisory council who evaluate all nominations received and then recommend up to 12 candidates each year to the chancellor of the order, who is also the lieutenant governor. Once inducted into the order, members may use the initials O.M. after their names for life.
In making the announcement, the chancellor said each of the men and women being honoured this year reflect a wealth of talent and an unwavering commitment to their respective communities.
Those to be invested in 2008 are:
- John Bock, youth, corrections and restorative justice advocate;
- Catherine (Myrtle) deMeulles, Métis artist, Elder and storyteller;
- David Glenn Friesen,business and community leader;
- David Gislason, founding member Manitoba Leafcutter Bee Association and Icelandic community leader;
- Helen Preston Glass, pioneer in the evolution of the nursing profession;
- Romulo F. Magsino, educator and leader in the Filipino-Canadian community;
- Robert Ronald McLean, Aboriginal magistrate, advocate and minister to his community;
- Sophia Rabliauskas, environmental activist and member of Poplar River First Nation;
- Hartley T. Richardson, noted business leader, philanthropist and community volunteer;
- Peter Sawatzky, master-class bronze sculptor;
- Evelyn Shapiro, instrumental to Canada’s first provincewide home care program; and
- Muriel Smith, status of women and human rights advocate.
This year’s investiture will take place at a ceremony to be held July 10 at the Manitoba Legislative Building.
