Twelve People to Receive
Order of Manitoba
Twelve new members will be inducted into the Order of Manitoba this year, Lt.-Gov. John Harvard, chancellor of the order, announced today.
“Once again, the calibre of the five women and seven men being recognized in 2007 exemplifies the tremendous accomplishments of Manitobans at the community, national and international levels,” said Harvard. “It is truly a pleasure to welcome their membership in the Order of Manitoba.”
The province’s highest honour was established under special legislation “to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence in any field of endeavour benefiting in an outstanding manner the social, cultural or economic well-being of Manitoba and its residents.”
Those to be invested this year are:
- Gail Asper, business and community leader, and human rights advocate;
- Clifford H.C. Edwards, lawyer, dean emeritus and law reformer;
- Ivan Eyre, artist and professor;
- Janice Filmon, community leader and volunteer;
- Elmer Hildebrand, broadcasting pioneer;
- John Albert Jack, educator and leader in the Caribbean community;
- Lynn B. Johnston, internationally-syndicated cartoonist;
- Verna J. Kirkness, professor, Aboriginal education specialist and advocate;
- June S. Menzies, economist and advocate for women, social justice and law reform;
- Ken Ploen, Canadian Footbal League hall of fame member, U.S. college football star and community volunteer;
- Paul G. Thomas, professor and expert in the fields of public governance and administration; and
- Ed Wood, Aboriginal elder and volunteer.
An independent advisory council evaluates nominations and recommends up to twelve candidates each year to the lieutenant governor.
This year’s investiture will take place at a ceremony to be held July 12 at the Legislative Building
Members receive the insignia of the order and may use the initials O.M. after their names for life.
