Twelve People to Receive
Order of Manitoba
Twelve individuals will be invested in the Order of Manitoba this year, Lt.-Gov. John Harvard, chancellor
of the order, announced today.
The province’s highest honour was established to honour Manitobans who have achieved excellence in any field
resulting in outstanding benefits to the social, cultural or economic well-being of the province and its residents.
“I am delighted to make this announcement on the 135th anniversary of the province’s entry into confederation,” said Harvard. “We welcome these deserving recipients to membership in the Order of Manitoba. The excellence of their wide range of contributions is appreciated by all Manitobans.”
Those to be invested this year are:
- Randy Bachman, musician;
- Gladys Evelyn Cook, Aboriginal
elder and volunteer;
- Dr. Albert D. Friesen, biotechnology
pioneer;
- Irene Grant, women's rights
activist;
- Dr. Chander Gupta, uro-gynecologist;
- Edward Head, Métis leader;
- Terrance Hind, sports organization
leader and community volunteer;
- Martin Johnson, firefighter,
union executive, and safety and burn fund crusader;
- Ovide Mercredi, national
Aboriginal leader;
- Kathleen Richardson, philanthropist
and volunteer;
- Glenora Slimmon, consumer,
co-operative and agricultural activist; and
- Maurice Strong, business, political
and environmental leader.
An independent advisory council evaluates nominations and recommends candidates to the lieutenant
governor who invests those who are recommended.
This year’s investiture will take place at a ceremony to be held July 15 at the Legislative Building.
Members receive the insignia of the order and may use the initials O.M. after their names for life.
